Whereas the former Eastern Bloc used to lag behind musically, recent years have seen the ex-communist countries do remarkably well. The Russian pagan/folk metal combo Arkona, with the characteristic voice of lead singer Masha, is at the forefront of the East European metal scene. The lyrical content is soaked in the legends and lore that are still very much part of the Russian national character. The enthusiastic vocals and powerful metal are combined with a broad range of traditional instruments that conjure up an almost medieval atmosphere. Their breakthrough album ‘Goi, Rode, Goi!’ received top marks from both critics and fans and since then they have become one of the genre’s flag bearers. With ‘Khram’ set to drop in early 2018 it looks like their second GMM appearance will include new tracks!!(#GMM18)
