Delain was founded back in 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt but it wasn’t until 2005 and the recruitment of singer Charlotte Wessels that things really took off. The symphonic metal band has since released five albums and has extensively toured both the US and Canada in support of top acts such as Nightwish and Sabaton. Singer Charlotte Wessels has both range and emotion and as so often in symphonic metal the songs are larger than life. Their darkest and heaviest disc to date, ‘The Human Contradiction’ (2014) is still an album that builds a bridge between pop and heavier music genres and ‘Moonbathers’ (2016) was universally hailed as their most mature and consistent album yet. One year after the release of ‘Apocalypse & Chill’ (2020), founder Martijn Westerholt announced the dissolution of the band, stating his intention to continue as a solo project. However, several months later he retracted his earlier statement and announced he would be forming a new line-up. The new incarnation’s first studio outing is set for a February 2023 release and their fifth GMM set is the perfect time to introduce the masses to ‘Dark Waters’. #GMM23
