Empath Volume 2

Devin Townsend is one of a kind. He started his career as the lead singer on Steve Vai’s 1993 ‘Sex & Religion’ album but before long he formed his own metal band with Strapping Young Lad. ‘City’ (1997) is often cited as the prime exponent of SYL’s brand of extreme metal with elements from thrash, industrial, black, death and progressive metal. Following Strapping Young Lad’s dissolution in 2007 Townsend continued solo, incorporating progressive metal, melodic rock, jazz, blues, prog rock, industrial and symphonic rock influences into a more accessible repertoire. Devin Townsend Project released its debut ‘Ki’ in 2009 and racked up seven albums before Devin pulled the plug to return to his solo work on his own label HevyDevy Records, with ‘Empath’ (2019) as the first output since 2014’s ‘Z²: Dark Matters’. With twenty-five albums to date, Devin Townsend is an extremely prolific songwriter. Like no other, he knows how to create a unique listening experience by fusing the extremes of the sonic spectrum. Add in a five-octave vocal range and it’s fair to say Devin Townsend is a musical millipede. (#GMM21)
