Hard to fathom that a pioneering thrash band with a 36-year pedigree has never played GMM. Flotsam and Jetsam formed in Phoenix, Arizona at the start of the eighties and their 1986 debut ‘Doomsday for the Deceiver’ is still considered a genre classic. The stellar performance of bassist and main songwriter/lyricist Jason Newsted didn’t go unnoticed and Metallica recruited Newsted to replace Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tragic tour bus accident. Still, Flotsam and Jetsam didn’t break stride, as illustrated by ‘No Place for Disgrace’ (1988), a record that lived up to the expectations created by their debut. Flotsam subsequently inked a new deal with MCA but ‘When the Storm Comes Down’ (1990) was not the success they were hoping for. Throughout the nineties and into the noughties they sailed a more progressive course, with varying degrees of success. They’ve had their share of personnel changes over the years but the return to the fold of Mike Gilbert and Michael Spencer brought fresh oxygen to the band, culminating in a rejuvenated back-to-their-roots sound on their last three studio outings: the eponymous ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’ (2016), ‘The end of Chaos’ (2019) and ‘Blood in the Water (2021).
