Biography

Gaahl is definitely one of the more infamous characters in this year’s line-up. In the past he has built a name for himself as the frontman of Gorgoroth, Trelldom, Wardruna and God Seed, proving his versatility in terms of vocal styles. With his current project Gaahl’s Wyrd he pushes the boat out further than ever before. In 2017 Gaahl’s Wyrd recorded six Trelldom tracks that hadn’t been performed live before but their true recording debut is 2019’s ‘GastIR – Ghosts Invited’, an absolute gem featuring guest spots by some of Norway’s top black metal musicians. Innovative and intense, this is not a black metal album per se, although it’s clearly still rooted in black metal. ‘GastIR’ is not Gorgoroth-heavy but does an exceptional job of creating an angst-ridden feel, punctuated by the eerie clean vocal style Gaahl adopts on the album. Add in the odd Trelldom and Gorgoroth cover and you’ve got the makings of a classic GMM set. (#GMM20)
