Papa Emeritus III has been deposed, long live Cardinal Copia!! If Ghost maintain their usual cycle, we’ll be welcoming a new Papa at GMM2018, flanked by his eternal Nameless Ghouls. Since their 2010 debut ‘Opus Eponymous’, this Swedish devil-worshipping ministry has evolved from an underground band into a major draw. Their first GMM set in 2011 was a roaring success and 2018 will mark their fifth appearance here. Ghost are about the full package: the music, the visual experience and the band’s stage presence make for a tongue-in-cheek satanic whole. The lyrical content matches the band’s look with themes ranging from the impending arrival and presence of the Devil and the Antichrist, to male domination of women throughout the ages, to man’s pursuit of something better and the absence of God (‘Meliora’). As for their music, their early work can be described as an evil metal mix reminiscent of Mercyful Fate, Witchfinder General or even Blue Öyster Cult. Meliora (2015) was more accessible than its predecessors, even if the lyrical content and the band’s imagery certainly didn’t endear them to mainstream America. Meanwhile, Ghost’s upcoming fourth album is scheduled for an April 2018 release so strap on your cilice! (#GMM18)
