Countless magazines have named ‘Appetite for Destruction’ the best debut album ever and who can blame them? At the time this record caused a run on record stores worldwide. The band was founded two years earlier by frontman Axl Rose, guitarists Tracii Guns and Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. By the time ‘Appetite’ came out Tracii Guns had already been replaced by Slash, who went on to become a true guitar icon. Follow-up ‘G N' R Lies’ (1989) consolidated the band’s success and acted as a stepping stone for the double best seller ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘Use Your Illusion II’, which topped the charts worldwide for close to two years. Unfortunately the double release also fuelled the strife between Axl and the rest of the band. The cover album ‘The Spaghetti Incident? (1993) foreshadowed the eventual breakup. After a 15-year hiatus Axl Rose assembled an entirely new line-up to record ‘Chinese Democracy’ but while GNR slowly regained its former status, a reunion seemed to be out of the question. For years, ‘not in this lifetime’ was the standard reply to any question regarding a possible reunion. Until 2016, when Slash and McKagan reconciled with Axl and GNR embarked on the… ‘Not in This Lifetime … Tour’. The renewed collaboration has proved so successful that no one seems to know exactly when the tour is supposed to end but one thing’s for certain: they will conquer Graspop first!
