Biography

Berlin’s In Extremo delivers a blend of medieval ballads in a variety of languages including Latin, Hebrew, Gaelic and Galician on the one hand, and original metal tracks with German lyrics on the other. In addition to a traditional line-up of guitars, bass and drums they make generous use of medieval instruments such as bagpipes, shawn, harp and hurdy gurdy, and they even perform in period dress. In Extremo started out as two separate projects, a rock band and a medieval band, that finally merged in 1995. Their first official release ‘In Extremo (Gold)’ dropped two years later. Despite the seemingly limited commercial prospects of such a project, their breakthrough album ‘Verehrt und Angespien’ (1999) album paved the way for appearances at LA’s famous Whiskey a Go Go venue and the Roskilde festival in Denmark; ‘Sängerkrieg’ (2008) even went all the way to No. 1 on the German album charts. 2017’s ’40 wahre Lieder’ – The Best of’ is a good place to start if you haven’t heard them before. Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Eluveitie fans will find much to like here. (#GMM20)
