Heavy Metal

United Kingdom

Judas Priest are widely regarded as the godfathers of heavy metal and after five decades they are still going strong with their trademark twin lead guitars, Rob Halford’s impressive vocal range and a skin-tight rhythm section led by co-founder Ian Hill. In 1980 Priest forced a worldwide breakthrough with the release of their landmark ‘British Steel’ album and the hits ‘Breaking the Law’ and ‘Living after Midnight’. Follow-up ‘Point of Entry’ (1981) and especially ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ (1982) further cemented the band’s reputation. ‘Painkiller’ (1990) brought a heavier edge to Priest’s music and was met with rave reviews and a triumphant reception by the metal community. A new decade of heavy metal domination seemed in the making but unfortunately the new album also foreshadowed the departure of frontman Rob Halford. Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens was eventually recruited as a replacement but it wasn’t until Rob’s return in 2003 that Priest’s former glory was restored. ‘Angel of Retribution’ (2005), the concept album ‘Nostradamus’ (2008) and Redeemer of Souls (the first studio album with K.K. Downing’s replacement Richie Faulkner) kept Priest at the forefront of the heavy music scene but the best was yet to come with 2018’s ‘Firepower’, the band’s highest charting album to date. Their special 50th anniversary set includes the usual suspects as well as a few surprises. (#GMM22)
