Black Metal

It’s always a treat when musicians deliver new material that comes completely out of left field. With Arsenal John Roan concocts an eclectic mix of pop, world music and hip hop but few people are aware of his predilection for extreme metal -  Darkthrone’s ‘Transylvanian Hunger’ is one of his all-time favourites. During the pandemic he explored potential musical avenues in the extreme metal realm. This resulted in debut single ‘The Realm’, which delves into the strained relationship with his mother. Don’t expect a copy of 90s Norwegian black metal but his own take on the genre in which post metal guitars and blast beats refer to this era. Stake’s Joris Casier and Brent Vanneste were among those who lent a helping hand but the most striking aspect is John’s crystal-clear, powerful delivery that is very reminiscent of Faith No More. At the moment we have no idea how this will pan out live but our curiosity is peaked. (#GMM22)
