After a career that spans half a century Lynyrd Skynyrd are just about ready to throw the towel but not before treating millions of southern rock fans to a last farewell. The band formed way back in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. After several name changes they finally settled on Lynyrd Skynyrd in ’69 and this coincided with a highly successful period that saw Skynyrd single-handedly putting the southern rock genre on the world music map. Major hits like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Free Bird’ seemed to come naturally and every album they put out reached gold or platinum status. Then disaster struck in 1977 when a plane crash killed three band members, including singer Ronnie Van Zant. It would take a full decade before the surviving band members resurrected the band by embarking on a tour with Ronnie’s younger brother Johnny Van Zant. They never managed to recapture the success of their early days and over the years numerous band members came and went, but the magic of the live performances has always remained intact. (#GMM19)
