Biography

The metal scene had been buzzing with rumours for several months before the protagonists confirmed that yes, Mercyful Fate had decided to embark on its first festival tour in ages. GMM has already had a taste of Mercyful Fate magic with the occasional classic featured in King Diamond’s set but this is different. Original members King Diamond and Hank Shermann (guitars) will be joined by Bjarne T. Holm (drums) and Mike Wead (guitars), with Armored Saint’s Joey Vera assuming bass duties in replacement of Timi Hansen, who passed away from cancer in early November. They’ll be playing a special set consisting solely of material taken from the first two Mercyful fate albums ‘Melissa’ (1983) and ‘Don’t Break the Oath’ (1984) as well as their first self-titled mini EP from 1982 and a limited number of new tracks written specifically in the early Mercyful Fate style. They’re also bringing their biggest stage production yet. Mercyful Fate were instrumental in fuelling the first wave of black metal with their dark lyrics dwelling on evil and the occult, King’s amazing range and his ability to leap from a death growl to an eerie falsetto, and the twin riffing attack so typical of heavy metal heavyweights Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. All gather at the sound of the demon bell and come to the sabbath! (#GMM20)
