Biography

Naglfar is the name of the ship which, according to Viking lore, is made entirely from the toenails and fingernails of the dead but it is also ae Swedish melodic black metal band of the same name. we’re chuffed to have them with us this year because they don’t tour all that often. Produced by Hypocrisy’s Peter Tägtgren, Naglfar’s debut ‘Vittra’ (1992) contained the qualities that would characterise all of their future output: great musicianship, heart-stoppingly beautiful melodies but a sound as crushingly oppressive as the coils of an anaconda. Follow-up ‘Diabolical’ (1998) features an undeniable progression in terms of songwriting. Indeed, although Dissection were most often cited as the genre’s top dogs, Naglfar undeniably influenced many of their genre peers that came after them. Their last album to date is 2012’s ‘Téras’, a masterpiece that illustrated they hadn’t lost their knack for catchy riffs, compelling melodies and blistering solos. Who knows, if we’re really lucky there might be some new work in the offing as well? (#GMM20)
