Biography

Formed in 1996, this symphonic metal band was immediately successful in its home country of Finland with ‘Angels Fall First’ (1997). Their international breakthrough came gradually with the release of the next three albums. At times integrating folk or industrial metal into their music, Nightwish nevertheless stick to their tried-and-true recipe of bombastic symphonic metal with orchestral arrangements and soaring female operatic vocals. In the new millennium, line-up changes and a few less well-received albums seemed to dull down the enthusiasm surrounding the band. Then, in 2012, Nightwish bounced back with the addition of former After Forever vocalist Floor Jansen. Always expressive, powerful and hard-hitting in the driving rhythm sections yet restrained and emotional in the more intimate passages, Jansen’s voice has been hailed by critics as the final piece to complete the Nightwish puzzle. Her first studio album with the band, 2015’s ‘Endless Forms Most Beautiful’ has consolidated the band’s status as the flagbearers of symphonic metal. (Text: Niels Desmedt / Translation: Nick Devos)
