Secrets of the Moon

Secrets of the Moon
Played at Graspop Metal Meeting

Only a decade ago German black metal bands were often the laughing stock of the scene. ‘Image over content’ was the verdict but Secrets of the Moon was clearly different. Their often epic songs, the well-thought-out concept and the intelligent lyrics turned many new fans on to the black metal genre. Meanwhile Secrets of the Moon has kept evolving musically and exploring virgin territory, culminating in their latest full-length, ‘Sun’. Careful listeners will certainly discern some Katatonia and even Bauhaus or Fields of the Nephilim in there. Unlike many other bands they are not afraid to experiment and step outside of their comfort zone. The result on ‘Sun’ is nothing short of spectacular and infusing several tracks with an ambient and psychedelic feel takes this album way beyond the traditional genre boundaries. Even if you’re not a black metal fan Secrets of the Moon is well worth checking out! (Text: Geert Struyven / Translation: Nick Devos)
