This isn’t just any trio. Any band including drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan and singer/guitarist Richie Kotzen is deserving of the supergroup label. Formed in New York in 2012, Winery Dogs released their self-titled debut the following year. With tracks varying from hard rockers to blues rock and more intimate ballads, they immediately caught the attention or rock-loving audiences all over the world. With their debut being so well-received there was a lot of pressure to come up with an even better sophomore album but ‘Hot Streak’ (2015) did the job. With three consummately talented musicians like this the pitfalls of grandstanding are never far away but while they do not attempt to downplay their abilities in any way, their individual talents always serve the song. The result is an amazingly varied rock record with jazzy undertones. In terms of variety and musicianship, Winery Dogs have accomplished more in two albums than other bands in an entire career.
