Hard Rock

United Kingdom

UFO’s career spans half a century. The band formed in London in 1968 and the English rockers are a crucial link between early hard rock & heavy metal and the NWOBHM. UFO inspired a host of other bands throughout the 80s and 90s and are famous for a number of genre classics such as ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Rock Bottom’ and ‘Lights Out’. With vocalist Phil Mogg as the only constant member, UFO’s history is pockmarked with personnel changes and they went on hiatus twice only to reform in a different configuration. Michael Schenker did several stints with the band in the 70s, 90s and 00s and Jason Bonham manned the kit in the early noughties. The line-up’s been pretty stable since the addition of guitarist Vinnie Moore and although they never succeeded in recapturing the success of their vintage days, their influence on metal bands such as Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Iron Maiden, etc. is well-documented. Check out the CD live set with six classic performances released back in 2009 if you want to get a sense of what these guys sound like live. (#GMM19)
