From their high school beginnings in 1997 to 2013 when they decided to take a break, Underoath were a mainstay of the alternative music scene. They started out as a metalcore band but evolved into a (post-)hardcore outfit and finally an alternative rock group. The addition of Spencer Chamberlain for ‘They’re Only Chasing Safety’ (2004) changed the equation as his more guttural vocals put Underoath in the screamo camp, a move that divided long-time fans of the band. The shift in musical direction became even more pronounced on ‘Define the Great Line’ (2006), which featured a variety of influences such as metalcore, emo/screamo and post-metal. Underoath went on hiatus in 2013 but reactivated in 2015. In 2018 they put out their first studio album in eight years but their most recent slab ‘Voyeurist’ (2022) is particularly interesting. The first album they’ve produced entirely by themselves, it is one of their best records yet, both musically and in terms of content as it asks existential questions about why we are here while taking a critical view of the role of faith and organised religion.
