Biography

Formed in 1988 in Sacramento, California, the American alternative metal band Deftones led the way in experimenting with heavy (metal) riffs, ethereal melodies and alternately screamed and whispered clean vocals. Influences by groundbreaking acts such as Tool, Faith No More and Rage Against the Machine soon expanded their metal leanings and when their debut ‘Adrenaline’ dropped they embarked on relentless touring schedule. Two years later ‘Around the Fur’ helped grow their fan base and saw them experimenting even more with modern rock and new wave influences. On ‘White Pony’ (2000) they shed their nu-metal label and solidified their reputation as one of the most experimental alternative metal bands around. Meanwhile a severe road accident landed bassist Chi Cheng in a coma, leading Deftones to shelve the ‘Eros’ album in favour of an entirely new project. The ensuing album, ‘Diamond Eyes’ (2012) is still one of their best to date. Their most recent effort ‘Gore’ (2016) is also their most acclaimed release since ‘White Pony’ and dovetails perfectly with that album’s experimental rock, space rock and shoegaze vibe. (#GMM20)
