Devin Townsend is one of a kind. He started his career as the lead singer on Steve Vai’s 1993 ‘Sex & Religion’ album. Before long he formed his own metal band Strapping Young Lad. ‘City’ (1997) is often cited as the prime exponent of the band’s brand of extreme metal with elements from thrash, industrial, black, death and progressive metal. Following Strapping Young Lad’s dissolution in 2007 Townsend continued solo, incorporating progressive metal, melodic rock, jazz, blues, prog rock, industrial and symphonic rock influences into a more accessible repertoire. With over twenty albums to date, Devin Townsend is an extremely prolific songwriter; adding in his five-octave vocal range, it’s fair to say Devin Townsend is a musical millipede. (#GMM17)
