Fu Manchu are a stoner rock band often bracketed together with Kyuss, that other Californian band that shaped the stoner landscape in the early 90s. Both bands are part of the so-called Palm Desert Scene, which has spawned several dozen desert rock/stoner rock bands over the years. Originally formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band called Virulence, it took them almost a decade, including a string of personnel changes and a name change, to release their studio debut with ‘No One Rides for Free’. In their early years they forged a solid live reputation opening for such acts as Kyuss, White Zombie, Corrosion of Conformity and Marilyn Manson. Meanwhile they‘ve put out a total of 12 studio albums and several EPs in addition to guest appearances on many releases by other artists. Their most recent album ‘Clone of the Universe’ offers the kind of tight rockers that are Fu Manchu’s bread and butter. Closing track ‘Il Mostro Atomico’ is an experimental 18-minute track with a contribution by Rush’s Alex Lifeson. (#GMM24)
