Death Metal

Gojira are the flag bearers of the French extreme metal scene. Well-known for their conservationist tendencies, they actively support the Sea Shepherds Conservation Society out of a genuine concern over man’s treatment of mother earth. Their new single ‘Another World’ dropped this summer and once again decries the deplorable state in which we’ve left our planet. Described in the past as a hybrid of Morbid Angel and Voivod, Gojira are one of those bands that defy labelling thanks to a technically sophisticated approach that incorporates influences ranging from thrash and progressive metal to death metal and groove. Infusing their music with myriad twists and turns, tempo changes, well-timed breakdowns and interludes, they know just when to hold back and when to come out all guns blazing. Their Grammy-nominated sixth album ‘Magma’ (2016) has taken their popularity to new heights. A powerful and haunting eulogy to the Duplantier brothers’ deceased mother, the album features more clean vocals than usual, a weapon they’ve used rather sparingly until now but that accentuates the emotional nature of the tracks. With the inevitable aging of the metal genre’s top acts, Gojira are one of the new flagbearers everyone is counting on. We have no doubt they’re equal to the task. (#GMM21)
