Musical geniuses are few and far between but Norwegian loner Ihsahn definitely belongs in the latter category. He is of course world famous for his prominent role in Emperor, the uncrowned kings of black metal. After the last reunion shows Emperor was finally laid to rest as the band members were not willing to postpone the inevitable purely for financial gain. Now operating under his own steam, Ihsahn is making his mark as a solo musician who continues to shape extreme metal in his unique and inimitable way, his black metal roots blending effortlessly with the most complex progressive elements. On stage Ihshan is joined by the members of Norwegian progressive metal band Leprous, who were trained by the master himself. After seven full CD’s Ihsahn opted for a different format this past year by releasing two EPs. Despite a very different approach, ’Telemark’ and ‘Pharos’ are very complementary and it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out live. (#GMM22)
