Biography

Rolling Stone magazine has labelled them ‘the best metal band of their generation’. Fact is that the guys from Mastodon always make an impression, frequently surprise and never disappoint. Mastodon are extremely versatile, integrating numerous heavy genres into their songs including sludge, stoner, alternative metal, progressive metal, heavy metal and more. As a result they are impossible to pigeonhole but the music of bassist Troy Sanders, guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor is invariably complex, engaging and creative. Formed in 2000, the band’s 2002 debut ‘Remission’ made an immediate impact and the following year they became an instant crowd favourite on their GMM debut. The power of Mastodon lies not just in the surprising and many-layered compositions. Incessant touring has woven the band into a tightly-knit unit but more than anything else it’s their amazing chops that continue to wow crowds around the globe. Their most recent studio outing ‘Emperor of Sand (2017) reins in the band members’ prodigious technical skills to achieve a delicate balance between consummate musicianship and functionality. The end result is one of the best – if not the best – album in their catalogue. (#GMM20)
