Biography

Iceland has spawned a rich and varied metal scene in recent years and one of the main exponents of this evolution is the Viking/folk metal band Skálmöld, which literally translates as ‘age of swords’. Based in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, Skálmöld initially had trouble finding a record label. Following the release of their debut they were signed by a major label and things took off from there. Their main influences include Anthrax, Metallica, Maiden, Ensiferum and Slayer and their latest offering ‘Sorgir’ (2018) is the most accessible of the five full-length albums they’ve released so far. Skálmöld’s bombastic metal sings the praises of Iceland’s past with Maiden-style guitar harmonies, gripping riffs, predominantly unclean vocals and alternately pounding and blasting drums. In fact, the rousing music makes you want to scream along but this can prove a bit difficult since all the lyrics are in Icelandic. Raise those horns and let Skálmöld regale you with tales from Norse mythology and Icelandic sagas. (#GMM19)
