Virgin Steele

Barbaric and romantic at the same time? Judging by the records American band Virgin Steele have put out over the years this is not a contradiction in terms. Over the years, Virgin Steele abandoned the hard rock/heavy metal of their early days in favour of an unusual combination of symphonic and - often bombastic - power metal, laced with classical elements. The band themselves refer to this style as ‘barbaric romanticism’. ‘Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation’ (2015) continues along the lines of its predecessor ‘The Black Light Bacchanalia’ (2010) with amazing riffs and singer David DeFeis’ extensive range as the main focal points. Virgin Steele are also rumoured to be working on a DVD chronicling the history of the band. (Text: Wim Vander Haegen / Translation: Nick Devos)
