Black Metal

The story behind Zeal & Ardor, Manuel Gagneux’s one-man project, is common knowledge by now but it’s still a remarkable one. The seed for the avant-garde project was planted when two separate sources advised Gagneux to do something with, respectively, ‘black metal’ and ‘gospel and blues music’. The idea stuck and Gagneux went to work... On ‘Devil Is Fine’ (2016), Gagneux combines black metal with traditional gospel, soul and slave songs. The release made serious waves through intriguing vocals, the obscure, hellish dark guitars and the clashing music styles. ‘Stranger Fruit’ (2018) – the title is a nod to ‘Strange Fruit’, a Billie Holliday song about the lynching of African Americans – breathes the same eerie, devilish atmosphere of their debut but experiments with greater sonic diversity. While Zeal & Ardor’s detractors scoff at what they feel is a watered-down version of true black metal, so many others welcome Gagneux’ total disregard for musical boundaries and his fresh take on those established genres. The release of their self-titled third album is tentatively scheduled for some time in 2022. (#GMM22)
