Most prominent black metal bands today have been around since the advent of the genre in the early nineties. One of the most notable exceptions to this rule are the Swedes from Watain. Ever since their inception almost a quarter century ago, they’ve left a trail of drugs, violence and blood. Over the years, there have been allegations of live animal sacrifices but none have been substantiated. Mind you, this band is not about image because their previous appearances here convinced both friend and foe. Watain combine the rawness of Bathory with the catchy harmonies of Dissection. From the black metal of ‘Rabid Death’s Curse’ to the melodic epic grandeur of ‘Lawless Darkness’, Watain’s sound keeps evolving. Their latest outing ‘The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain’ is a statement in that regard: it’s a cauldron of torture and ultimate pleasure but once the rollercoaster is set in motion you’re in for the ride of your life. #GMM23
