Some call it hardcore, others call it metal and still others claim they pioneered the mathcore genre but one thing’s for certain: the music of The Dillinger Escape Plan is chaotic but very recognisable and unique, allowing them to carve out their own niche in the metal scene. The musicianship is top-notch and their live sets are extremely tight and energetic, often ending in bruises on and off the stage. In 2016 fans of the band were left dumbstruck by frontman Greg Puciato’s announcement that Dillinger Escape Plan would be pulling the plug and sure enough, in December 2017 they staged their final show in New York. The farewell tour was an intense, emotional affair, with fans turning out in droves. Since then, members have kept busy with other projects. Greg Puciato pursued a solo career and collaborations, while guitarist Ben Weinman focused on production and other musical ventures. Their legacy as pioneers of mathcore and chaotic hardcore-infused metal remains untouchable and their influence continues to ripple through a new generation of experimental heavy bands. Then in 2024 they ‘reunited’ with Dimitri Minakakis returning on vocals but it’s not an official reunion – yet. Whatever, let’s just enjoy this! (#GMM26)
