HANABIE. is the latest sensation from Japan. This metalcore band from Tokyo was conceived in 2015 and practices a style they themselves describe as Harajuku core. The building blocks of their music are metalcore, hardcore punk and nu-metal, with a smattering of hip hop and electronica elements. Early success at band contests and an offer from Crystal Lake drummer Gaku Taura to use his own recording studio gave them a welcome leg up in the early years. As they continued to perform at live houses (venues in Japan where students can perform) they also had academic concerns as they were yet to graduate. Shortly after obtaining their respective degrees, their debut album ‘Girls Reform Manifest’ (2021) dropped and helped them make a name for themselves on the Japanese capital’s indie scene. Their sophomore album ‘Reborn Superstar!’ (2023) is their first on a major label. Their music has been likened to Maximum the Hormone, Crossfaith and Enter Shikari and 2024 is their first year touring the European festival circuit. (#GMM24)
