Anton Kabanen’s track record speaks for itself. Just months after being summarily fired from his previous band Battle Beast he assembled a new outfit under the monniker Beast in Black. Although the music is in the same vein as Battle Beast, their 2017 debut ‘Berserker’ is far from a BB clone, that much is obvious from the over-the-top production and instrumentation. With influences ranging from Priest to Manowar and Sabbath to W.A.S.P. and Accept, the album, like so much of Kabanen’s work, is inspired by the Japanese manga series Berserk. Don’t be fooled, though: ‘Berserker’ primarily ventilates the hate for his old bandmates now fermenting within the author’s heart – Megadeth, anyone? Their sophomore effort ‘From Hell with Love’ is set to drop in early February. It’ll be interesting to see whether the new album is just as vicious as the opening track on ‘Berserker’ or as synth-saturated and radio-friendly as the rest of their debut. One thing is beyond doubt: Beast in Black are one to see live. (#GMM19)
