Kanonenfieber approach blackened death metal with a historian's eye and a soldier's intensity. The German project centres thematically on the Great War, drawing lyrical inspiration from letters, diaries and historical documents. Instead of romanticising conflict, the songs expose the futility, trauma and human cost of trench warfare. Musically they fuse raw black metal atmosphere with death metal, shifting between blast beats and mournful passages that echo like distant artillery. Though relatively recent, the project quickly gained attention within the European extreme metal scene for both its concept and uncompromising sound. There is a theatrical element to their presentation, yet it never feels gimmicky. The focus remains on the music and the weight of its – unfortunately very relevant – subject matter. For those who appreciate black metal with depth and context Kanonenfieber are a must-see. (#GMM26)
