Heavy Metal

Famous for his multi-octave range, Kim Bendix Petersen aka King Diamond is one of the most unique characters in heavy metal history. When Mercyful Fate disbanded over musical differences in the mid-80s, King went on to found the eponymous King Diamond. Mercyful Fate eventually reformed in the 90s and for the most part of his career King Diamond has recorded and toured with both bands. King Diamond’s debut ‘Fatal Portrait’ (1986) is a transitional album: still characterised by the satanical approach of Mercyful Fate, the storyline nevertheless extends over multiple tracks. This was a trial run for the string of concept albums that were to follow, with ‘Abigail’ (1987) and ‘Them’ (1988) as standout examples. The band members are known for their consummate musicianship, with founding member Andy LaRocque as the main exponent. Diamond shows are theatrical performances in every sense of the word: not only does King take his own set design on tour but the horror stories told in the lyrics are acted out on stage. In 2013 King Diamond raised the roof of the Marquee; three years later they rocked main stage 2 as Friday’s headliners. The third time is the charm. (#GMM19)
