Biography

Korn were the first band to be labelled nu-metal back in the early nineties and their self-titled debut is widely viewed as the first nu-metal release. Guitarist James ‘Munky’ Shaffer, bassist Reginald ‘Fieldy’ Arvizu Korn and drummer David Silvera formed Korn from the ashes of funk metal band L.A.P.D. Guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch and frontman Jonathan Davis subsequently joined the band and in 1994 they released their first studio effort. While their initial two albums were well-received their career really took off with the release of their third outing ‘Follow the Leader’ (1998), which helped Korn build a large and fiercely loyal fan base. ‘Issues’ (2002) and ‘Untouchables’ (2005) perpetuated Korn’s commercial success and they sold out major venues worldwide. It’s been claiemd that Korn lost momentum with the departure of guitarist Brian Welch but the brilliant ‘Korn III: Remember Who You Are’ (2010) silenced the critics. Welch’s subsequent return in 2013 gave Korn a tremendous boost and their GMM gig that year set the festival arena ablaze in spite of a steady downpour. Haunted by the Jonathan Davis’ grief over the loss of his wife, the cathartic new album ‘The Nothing’ (2019) contains some of their most powerful work to date. (#GMM20)
