Berlin is the beating cultural heart of Germany and it’s there that Maria Lessing, Manuel Kohlert and Johannes Frenzel founded their post-hardcore collective Future Palace in 2018. The band’s name was inspired by their WhatsApp group. The German three-piece describe their style as alternative hardcore with 80s synth pop and electronica influences whereas pundits also highlight metalcore and nu-metal influences in their reviews. Maria’s lyrics are about personal experiences, depression, inner conflict and toxic relationships. Their sophomore outing ‘Run’ (2022) struck a chord both in Germany and abroad; follow-up ‘Distortion’ (2024) has cemented their reputation as musicians while Maria’s lyrics have gained even more depth, exploring such themes as vulnerability human connection and the search for personal meaning. One of their standout features is their ability to marry sonic bangers with lyrical sincerity. Their first GMM appearance was a welcome surprise to many and they’ve grown since then so if you’re into While She Sleeps, Spiritbox and others, you should definitely check them out. (#GMM26)
