Dutch-Slovakian deathcore outfit Distant operate at the extreme end of the spectrum, delivering a punishing mix of downtempo deathcore and slamming brutality. Originally formed in Rotterdam and Bratislava, they’ve carved out a niche with their cavernous production and crushing breakdowns. ‘Tyrannotophia’ (2021) is a good entry point, blending the chugging, pit-oriented action of a band like Ingested with a love of brutal destruction. Their lyrics often draw from dystopian and horror-inspired themes, creating a bleak, oppressive atmosphere that matches the music. More recent material like ‘Heritage’ (2023) expands their sound without sacrificing impact. If you’re after something that hits like a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel, Distant are hard to ignore.
