The band from Cambridge, England, is the brainchild of singer/guitarist/keyboardist Kevin R. Starrs, who is the only surviving member of the original line-up. Uncle Acid’s individual, complex brand of music draws on a number of influences from heavy metal, doom metal and stoner rock to psychedelic rock. Their music has been described as “the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges”. Drawing inspiration from old horror flicks, spaghetti westerns and seventies music, they take you on a psychedelic doom rock trip like no other. Lyrically, ‘Wasteland’ (2018) was inspired by the Starrs’ annoyance at fans ‘watching’ the shows through their smartphone screens. The album paints a gloomy picture of a dystopian society were all the inhabitants subsist on the propaganda they’re being fed. Their latest effort ‘Ora Blu’ is draws heavily from vintage soundtrack aesthetics, blending progressive rock, psychedelia and an alienating atmosphere. (#GMM26)
